Ten Facts About The Legend Kanu Nwankwo

     

1. Kanu was born on a typical "Nkwo" market day in Igbo land which earned  him the name                "Nwa-Nkwo" meaning baby born on Nkwo market day.

2. Kanu alongside Finidi George were the First Nigerian players to win the Champions League in        1995 with Ajax.

3. Kanu Nwankwo was the first African to captain and win the Olympic Gold in Men football, he led     a star-studded team at the 1996 and won the gold

4. Kanu's goal for Nigeria in the semifinal of the 1996 Olympics against Brazil made him the only African player to make judicious use of the "Golden Goal" rule to defeat World-Power Brazil.

5. Kanu Nwankwo's contribution in saving of life earned him recognition from UNICEF and he is         a UNICEF Ambassador.

6. Kanu Nwankwo did not score a single goal for Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations, neither did he win the title.

7. Although Kanu played actively for Nigeria, he did not take part in any U-20 World Cup, he only       participated in the U17 and Senior World Cup

8. Kanu's belief in Pan-Africanism made him come back to Nigeria to marry Amarachi, despite seeing a lot of European girls out there, the late Stella Obasanjo noted this.

9. Barely three months after winning the Olympic medal, he was diagnosed of having a heart defect.

10. Kanu Nwankwo is a Christian, and his English name is also "Christian".
