Simeone Men Gives Zidane First Defeat In Derby As They Trash Real Madrid 0-1 Before Home Crowd

Antoine Griezmann made the difference in the derby match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at Santiago Bernebeau after his 53 minutes strike gave Atletico the only and winning goal of the match.

Real Madrid possessed the ball more than Atletico but were unable to convert their possession of the ball to goal, while Atletico were organized in their defense, ensuring that Ronaldo is put under proper check.

Madrid played more shots than their visitors, having a total of 15 shots while Atletico 9. However on shots on target, Atletico were more focused and had five shots on target while Madrid had three shots on target.

The win makes Atletico trail league leaders Barcelona with five points even though Barca is yet to play her own match, while Madrid trail Atletico with four points and Barcelona with nine points.

The defeat at Bernebeau is Zidane's first defeat in the league as a manager.

It is Not About What I Want or Like For Myself, It Is About What Is Good For The Kids- Rev. Sr Mary-Ann

In this brief chat, REV. SR. MARY-ANN MARTINS the Supervisor of  St. Catherine Model School, Ojuelegba Surulere, Lagos, spoke with JOSEPH ODOEKWU of SPORTS INTELLIGENCE . Despite her not being actively involved in Sports, she still has knack for quality sports development at the grassroots level and believes that the kids need to be given adequate Sporting activities to enable them develop. She believes that the children will be useful to Nigeria someday  in Sports.Please read on. 


S.I: Tell us about your Sports Life Sister, which Sports did you ever participate in?

 (Laughs) Unfortunately, Sports have never been part of my activity even back in school, but since I am the head of the school and  Inter-house Sports is a very important and vital activity towards the development of the psycho-motor domain and cognitive domain of the kids, these activities are meant to help them achieve the say that "All work and No play makes Jack a dull boy", and to also build up their talent and skill and help them have a healthy living. So in this case, it is not about what I want or like for myself, it is about what is good for the kids and I will have to give it to them. Personally, I am not a lover of Sports even though I do Indoor games but generally I am not that kind of Sports person.

S.I: From what is going on in this Inter-House Sports, do you think Nigeria as a nation can benefit from the children here?

Of course, in a positive manner, Nigeria has got a lot to benefit from the children. We are training them and catching them young. We strongly believe that there are some of them who will not just drop Sports here at the Nursery and Primary level but continue and improve on it at the secondary school and also in the higher institution, so from there they could be involved in one or two national Sporting activities that could give them the right exposure and they will end up representing Nigeria in International competitions.

S.I: Okay Sister, thank you for making out time despite your tight schedule today.

Slow and steady can never win this race, these kids were out to pick the balls and return to their baskets as soon as possible. Not even a promise of chocolate or Ice-cream could distract them from their mission.

It may appear easy to burst the balloon but when it becomes competitive it is a different thing all together, these kids are not finding it easy trying to burst the balloon at their Inter-house Sports

Bilbao Away Win Against Marseille Did The Magic To Secure Round of 16 Spot

Athletic Bilbao went through to the round of 16 after a 1-1 draw at home against a desperate Marseille who needed to win by at least 0-2 to enable them scale through.

Marseille lost to Bilbao in the first leg by 0-1, and that win did the magic for a Bilbao side who had gotten an away goal and win in the first leg.

Bilbao is among the four Spanish teams who have scaled through to the round of 16 of the Europa League, others are Valencia, Sevilla and Villareal.

Liverpool Narrowly Get Round of 16 Place After Home Win of Augsburg

Liverpool joined Tottenham and Manchester United to book a place in the round of 16 place of the Europa League tournament, after beating Augsburg 1-0 at Anfield.

The first leg of the match which took place in Germany ended a goalless draw, leaving both sides to decide their fate in England.

James Milner's early goal in the four minutes through a penalty shoot was the decisive goal in the match, sending Liverpool through to the round of 16.

Bayern Leverkusen Send Sporting Lisbon Out Of Europa

Bayern Leverkusen also joined the list of teams to have qualified for the round of 16 of the ongoing Europa tournament.

Leverkusen beat Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in Germany to kill their hope of ever going forward to the round of 16. The first leg match was in favour of the German side who defeated the Portuguese side by 0-1.

Though, there seemed to be hope for Sporting since a 0-2 victory would have made them go through, but their host did not give room for that, sending them out in Germany was the final decision.

Valencia Confirms Ejection of Rapid Vienna From Europa After Completing 10-0 win in Two Leg Match

Valencia confirmed their superiority over Rapid Vienna after defeating the Austrian side 0-4 at their home ground humiliating and eliminating them from the Europa League.

The first leg was played in Spain and was in favour of the Spanish side, who showered their visitors with goals, ending the match in 6-0.

One would have thought that the second leg would have been a bit tough, as the home team was expected to have put up a good fight but rather, things went smoothly for the Spanish side.

A total of ten goals were scored in both legs by Valaencia, making them the highest scored team in two-leg match so far at the Europa League.

Villareal Force Napoli Out Of Europa Before Their Home Crowd

Napoli are out of the Europa after they were forced to a 1-1 draw by Villareal in Italy after 90 minutes of play.

Villareal who had defeated Napoli in her first leg in Spain knew the implications of not scoring away and lived up to it, ensuring that the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Napoli needed a 1-0 win to keep the hope alive or a 2-0 win that will guarantee their progressing to the round of 16 but this was not possible.

Unfortunately, Napoli could not progress before their home crowd, who had expected them to perform some magical exercise against the Spanish side who edged them out.

With the current situation, Napoli will now have to face their performance in the Serie A.

Basel Edge Out Saint Etienne On Away Goal Rule

Basel are through to the round of 16 after defeating Saint Etienne by 2-1at  St. Jakob-Park in Switzerland. Basel who are currently on top their home league were defeated in their first leg match by 3-2.

Although both teams tie on 4-4 aggregate, Basel scale through on away goal rule which gives them an edge ahead of their visitor who were once victorious over them.

Basel currently have 52 points from 21 matches in their home league and have actually extended their performance to Europa, where they are expected to face a new challenge when they play in the round of 16. 

Sevilla Is Through To Round of 16 Despite Molde Home Win

Sevilla are through to the next round of the Europa tournament despite losing 0-1 to Molde at  Aker Stadion. This is as a reult of their first leg win in Spain where they won their home match by 3-0.

Molde though defeated Sevilla but the 1-0 was not enough as what was required to level up was 3-0, while a 4-0 win would have guaranteed Molde a place in the round of 16 stage of the tournament.

Tottenham Trash Fiorentina 3-0 Qualify To Round of 16

Tottenham scaled through yesterday after comfortably beating Fiorentina by 3-0 at White Hart Lane.


With the tie level at 1-1 after the first leg in Italy, Ryan Mason put Spurs ahead on aggregate in the 25th minute with a well-taken finish from Dele Alli's lay-off.

Manchester United are through to the quarter final stage of the Europa tournament after beating their visitors 5-1 at Old Trafford to qualify on 6-3 aggregate.

It was the visitors who first opened scoring in the 27 minutes through Pione Sisto before United switched their attacking pump and goals came gushing out.

The pressure from United compelled Nikolay Boduruv to cause an own-goal for Midtjylland in the 32 minutes barely five minutes after their goal making United to level up before half time.

However, the pressure to win was still on United after a penalty awarded to them was lost and in the 64 minutes, Marcus Rashford scored United second goal and a third goal in 75 minutes, before Aguera scored United's fourth goal through a penalty in the 88 minutes. Memphis Depay sealed United's win in the 90 minutes after scoring the fifth goal, killing all hope of qualification by their visitors.

On the issue of Nigeria benefiting from this event he stated that Nigeria has a great potential and its possible that one or two athletes who had taken part in today's event may be fortunate and become useful to Nigeria in the future, but it is not restricted to Elimshire College alone, every other school can also perform that role to Nigeria as a nation.
