UEFA Champions League:Which Goalkeeper Will Make More Saves Tommorrow

As Bayern Munich travel to Italy tomorrow in the first leg of the knock-out stage between them and Juventus, Sports Intelligence X-Rays the likely performance of two greatest goalkeepers that would be on duty for the two teams

Gianluigi Buffon v Manuel Neuer

  • Both goalkeepers are world-class keepers and have a pedigree as far as the Champions League and World football is concerned.

  • Both goalkeepers got to the immediate semifinal of the Champions League with Buffon reaching the final, while Neuer's team was edged out in the semifinal stage;

  • If Juventus play the typical Catanaccio traditional style of play, it will expose Buffon to more work load while Neuer will be faced with little work in post;

  • If Bayern play their traditional attacking style of play, it could put Neuer in danger when they lose the ball and Juventus comes on counter-attack;

  • If Bayern attack consistently and concentrate more on outside 18-yard shot, this could also compel Buffon to make more saves or concede, while attempt by Bayern to enter the 18-Yard box will put Neuer on the danger zone

    If Juventus can curtail Bayern in the first half of play, then Neuer will have more work to do towards the end of the match and if care is not taken, goals may come;

    Buffon will need his wealth of experience in putting his defense in order, particularly for a team like Bayern that will aim at getting away goals at all cost.

    With all the above, Buffon is likely to face the challenge of making more saves in the clash than Neuer.
